Sculpting Type: producing 3d typography; 27 September 4-6 PM, Amsterdam

Khatt Books, the University of Amsterdam, Bijzondere Collecties, and the Yale Club invite you to a presentation by the Edo Smitshuijzen (author) and a subsequent reception hosted by Khatt Books and the University of Amsterdam in the Bijzondere Collecties Café, Oude Turfmarkt 129, 1012 GC Amsterdam, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.

Sculpting Type, An Introduction to cnc Typography, explains the basics of the wide range of manufacturing technologies for producing 3D typography.  It , explores the terra incognita outside of the conventional two dimensional comfort zone of graphic design, venturing into the exciting new territories of 3D typography. Desktop manufacturing is transforming the way we fabricate products, and 3D printing machines and cheap cnc robots are charting the way for ordinary computer-users to become product designers as well as manufacturers. Ultra customization, one-offs, and low-costs manufacturing are the future for products and architecture alike.

About the Author
Edo Smitshuijzen is an independent graphic and product designer and design writer. He was co-founding partner of the Amsterdam-based design studio, formerly known as BRS Premsela Vonk (and nicknamed ‘the Ministry of Design’), from 1977-1995. He was the design principal on several major and comprehensive corporate design and signage projects for various Dutch governmental bodies and multinational companies. He invented and developed a modular sign panel system (mss 0.5) produced under license in various countries around the world. He is author of several articles on design and typography and four seminal design books: Signage Design Manual (Lars Müller. Zurich. 2007), Arabic Type Specimen Book (De Binnenkant. Amsterdam. 2009), Sunday Stories (Khatt Books. Amsterdam 2010), and the just-released, Sculpting Type (Khatt Books, Amsterdam. 2013).
